About the Role

The Senior Freedom of Information (FOI) Officer’s primary responsibility is to ensure the efficient and effective provisioning of information to applicants’ pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act 1991 (the FOI Act). The Senior FOI Officer is accountable for assessing applications pursuant to Section 13 & 18 of the Freedom of Information Act; liaising with relevant stakeholders and other agencies, development of FOI staff and drafting complex determinations within legislated time frames.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide specialised knowledge, expertise, and judgement in managing FOI applications and making determinations, in accordance with the requirements of the FOI Act and applied knowledge of FOI legislation, case law, policy and associated legislation.
• Assess, evaluate, extend, and narrow the scope of FOI applications in accordance with the FOI Act, including the preparation of information, summaries, and reporting on FOI to senior management.
• Provide a timely, effective, and disciplined service through formulation of complex verbal and written correspondence and negotiation with applicants/agents/third parties within legislated timeframes.
• Provide advice and liaise with all internal and external clients, including other State Government agencies, to ensure effective service delivery and assist in informed decision making, including but limited to consultation and transfer requests from other agencies.
• Actively support the Manager, FOI Unit, by contributing to the effective management of the FOI Unit team, to ensure appropriate allocation of resources and efficient processing of all FOI applications.

About you

Essential Requirements:
• Previous experience in processing Freedom of Information applications.
• A sound applied knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act, Information Privacy Principles Instruction and State Records Act, with practical experience in FOI document assessment, research, collation, and presentation.
